A warded lock is a type of lock that uses internal obstructions, known as wards, to prevent unauthorized keys from operating the lock. The wards are shaped to fit within the keyway, blocking the movement of any key that doesn't have matching notches or slots.
For the lock to open, the key must have notches or slots that align perfectly with the wards. When the correct key is inserted, these notches allow the key to pass through the wards and rotate freely, which in turn moves the internal mechanism and unlocks the lock.
This type of lock design is one of the oldest and simplest forms of locking mechanisms, and is typically found in older or more basic locks, such as door locks or cabinet locks. Despite its simplicity, warded locks are still useful for certain applications where higher security is not a primary concern.
